Izzy and Moe were US Prohibition Agent Izzy Einstein Moe Smith, who confiscated of 5 million bottles of alcohol worth an estimated $15 million between 1920-1925 and made 4,932 arrests with a 95% conviction rate. They usually did not carry weapons and made arrests while unarmed.
To make their raids, they disguised themselves as almost every trade they could think of…waiters, firemen etc.
The pair were dismissed on November 13, 1925, "for the good of the service." Their superiors in the Prohibition Bureau never fully explained why they were released except it was known that the pair had arrested to many important people including the wives of several US Congressmen.
They eventually became career insurance agents.
Einstein and Smith's achievements inspired the television film, Izzy and Moe (1985), directed by Jackie Cooper. Jackie Gleason starred as Izzy, and Art Carney as Moe. Einstein's great-grandson appears in the film.
